Bisognava ci fosse anche una zanzara anofele, che trasmettesse il morbo. E quella a Trento è improbabile ci sia: troppo alta e troppo fredda. Ma se la famiglia della povera bambina era passata per Bibbione, allora è a Bibbione che bisogna andare a cercare, perché lì – nelle fasce costiere veneto-friulane, almeno secondo le mappe storiche epidemiologiche – fino a pochi anni fa era pieno di zanzare e di malaria, da cui il trinomio mortifero “acquitrino-anofele-uomo malarico” che per secoli e secoli ha imperversato in quasi tutta Italia. La gente moriva a bizzeffe. E chi non moriva nel giro di quarantott’ore per le forme peggiori – la terzana, la perniciosa – e pigliava solo quelle più leggere, moriva poco a poco, con le febbri e le epatiti che lo assalivano man mano, e man mano gli gonfiavano il fegato. Qui da noi, in Agro Pontino, li chiamavano “panzarotti”. E man mano morivano nei fossi. A migliaia e migliaia. Per secoli. Ed era la zanzara anofele che inoculava il morbo<br /> Dice: “Vabbe’, ma una volta però. Mica adesso. Adesso, secondo alcuni esperti, non c’è proprio più la zanzara anofele in Italia e anche Salvini ha detto che certe malattie, debellate più di cinquant’anni fa, adesso ce le stanno riportando gli immigrati”. Eh, beato te e gli esperti. Ma ne hanno sparate poche di cazzate gli esperti, nel corso della storia umana? Di Salvini invece non parliamo. C’era una volta il Duce però, che sosteneva di avere debellato la malaria con le bonifiche in ogni dove. E in effetti in Agro Pontino, dal 1927 al 1935, fu un’ira di Dio. Prosciugarono interamente le vecchie paludi, scavarono tutti i fossi e canali che volevi, e per un certo periodo, per l’appunto, sembrò davvero che non ci fosse più malaria. Ma subito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale – con la rottura degli argini e pompe idrovore, e gli allagamenti per contrastare lo sbarco alleato – dal 1944 al 1954 ci fu una recrudescenza malarica che infettò migliaia e migliaia di persone. Mia zia Alfea morì nel 1953 ed io ricordo ancora mio padre, nel 1954, che ballava sul letto tutto sudato, sotto l’ultimo attacco di febbre malarica a 40 o 41 gradi. Montagne di chinino gli diede il dottor Fabiano. La malaria venne battuta – e le zanzare sterminate davvero – solo quando gli americani portarono il Ddt, e con i Dakota ci irrorarono tutto l’Agro Pontino. Prima le bombe e poi il Ddt. Ma fu il Ddt che ci consentì di vivere e prosperare. Solo l’altro giorno però – ossia estate 2009 – nella piana di Fondi, in provincia di Latina, un villeggiante romano s’è beccato la malaria di tipo proprio autoctono “pontino”, da qualche anofele tuttora superstite. Che ne sai? Evidentemente pure il Ddt non le ha sterminate proprio tutte. Certo una bella botta gliel’ha data, ma qualche larva dev’essere rimasta, magari in sonno, nascosta ed acquattata in qualche polla d’acqua. E a lungo andare – un po’ alla volta – riciccia e torna fuori. Del resto tutti i più grandi storici della malaria – il Celli, il Missiroli, l’Arturo Bianchini di Terracina – sostenevano che l’epidemia avesse un andamento ciclico. Arrivata in Italia probabilmente appresso all’invasione di Annibale nel II secolo avanti Cristo, a fasi estremamente funeste avrebbe sempre alternato periodi anche lunghi di non incidenza, per poi magari riesplodere più forte. Che ne sai? Magari davvero le impennate di caldo di questi anni ne hanno risvegliata qualcuna. Ci vorrebbe un’altra spruzzata di Ddt. Dice: “Tu sei matto. È proibito”.<br /> Ah, sì? Pare che in Africa ogni anno continuino a morire tra le tre o le quattrocentomila persone – soprattutto bambini – di malaria, ma il Ddt è stato messo al bando dall’Organizzazione mondiale della sanità perché non è biodegradabile. È totalmente innocuo per l’uomo, ma ne hanno trovato tracce – grazie al complesso ciclo biologico – fin nel tessuto adiposo delle foche al Polo Nord.<br /> Io capisco le ragioni delle foche e capisco pure, volendo, quelle delle zanzare. Ma se debbo scegliere tra la vita di mio figlio e quella delle zanzare, io per me non avrei dubbi. Viva il Ddt e chi lo ha inventato.
